about

This is the second album by LACY POOL.

My way towards Steve Lacy’s music seems like a journey of detours. The igniting spark came later, at first Lacy’s sound felt too cold for me. But I kept coming across him and I got impressed by him more and more: Here is someone who plays with Monk and Taylor, does solo concerts on the soprano saxophone, plays with european improvisors, and writes compositions which, though rooted in the jazz tradition, yet work quite differently.
In 2000 my first approaches to these pieces. Found it difficult but great fun to translate the oblique yet floating thing to the piano – it took some time. But Monk was close by and that made it easier in my head. 2006 was the first time on stage with Christof Thewes and Michael Griener as Lacy Pool. Together we unlocked Lacy, found the momentum.
Why no bass? That never was a question. I wanted the band to function unlike a jazz quartet and it should not have a soprano sax. Now Lacy’s pieces were mine and ours, and it got easier and easier, everything fell into place. The clarity, the repeating motifs, the collage approach, the deconstruction, the flow. What a fun! Today, Rudi Mahall – I have been admiring him for a long time – is the reed man in the band. Rudi and Michael are long-time buddies; with them, nothing is impossible, musically.
DEADLINE is quite simple a tune from the 1980s, all about tempo. CLICHÉS, from the same period, has an african touch to it, however twisted in our rendition. TRICKLES juxtaposes different motifs and textures, we go through them in a solo/trio parcours. I have always been interested in little variations and miniatures, that’s how my piece FIELD (SOURCE) came about.BLUES FOR AIDA features an elegiac melody line, showing glimpses of Lacy’s musical architecture. All his pieces contain dedications, LADIES from the 1970s is for Billie Holiday. Even if it is not very obvious, while playing such an idea is always present subconsciously.
JAZZ AB 40 is an older up-tempo tune of mine; Lacy Pool is the best band for the piece and now, finally, it's on record. DREAMS relates to a vortex-like poem by Brion Gysin and uses the magical repetitions so typical for Lacy, motion and hesitation is the idea in our rendition. TROUBLES is pure joy of playing, we can even sing it. Give it a try!
